Volkswagen Touran 2011

Volkswagen Touran2011

The redesigned 2011 Volkswagen Touran made its world premiere at the 2010 Leipzig Auto Show today. Although this small minivan is a key part of VW’s product plan in Europe, there are no plans to bring the compact people-hauler to the U.S.

“There are no plans to import the new Touran into the U.S.,” Steve Keyes, Volkswagen of America spokesman, confirmed in response to an e-mail query by Inside Line. “We’ll continue to offer the Routan.”

The compact minivan will launch in August in Germany. A U.K. rollout is planned for October. Pricing has not yet been announced.

The 2011 Touran takes its new design direction from the latest versions of the Polo, Golf and Touareg. Notable changes on the redesigned Touran include a new grille, new front bumper, revised taillights with LED bulbs, and a new tailgate.

Among the powertrain highlights is a new entry-level, turbocharged and direct-injected, 1.2-liter TSI four-cylinder engine delivering 104 horsepower and 129 pound-feet of torque. This engine is available with or without Volkswagen’s BlueMotion package, which includes a start-stop function at idle and regenerative brakes. Two versions of the company’s turbocharged 1.4-liter TSI engine are available — a regular-strength 138-hp version and a peppier 168-hp flavor.

VW is also offering four diesel power plants, the most powerful of which is a 2.0-liter making 168 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This is the same engine used in the Golf GTD and, and of the eight available engines, will undoubtedly give the Touran the most pop.

Transmission offerings on the front-wheel-drive VW Touran include both a conventional six-speed manual and six- and seven-speed versions of Volkswagen’s DSG automated manual transmission.

Beyond that, the Touran gets Park Assist 2.0, which helps with parallel and diagonal parking and Dynamic Light Assist, which provides continuous main-beam headlights, says VW.

The Touran also gets new alloy wheels and chrome body-side strips. The cabin gets a three-spoke steering wheel and gauges with white backlighting.
